Practically anonymous Esperanza Spalding took Justin Bieber's Grammy award
On Sunday, February the 13th, happened the 53rd annual Grammy Awards. The show held at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif. When is about this kind of manifestations, it's well known that anything is possible to happen, but it appears that the thing that has happened this Sunday has shocked the public far more than it was expected. Practically anonymous 26 years old Esperanza Spalding won Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
It's not going to be so surprising if we check out her discography and the things that she has done for the last years but it was shocking when her name won over the name of Justin Bieber, the 16 years teenage mega star. Probably only people that listen jazz music knew about this girl but besides Mumford and Sons, Florence and the Machine and Drake, here was the guy who has sold out Madison Square Garden in two hours, whose video Baby was seen on You Tube 462, 308, 465 times and it is similar with the other his songs, the guy who bas been dating with some American starlets, even if he is 16, his haircut is being copied from many boys around the world, girls gone wild, his mom got an invitation to picture for Playboy…
It is not surprising that Justin Bieber' s fans were so disappointed and went mad when they heard about the award. Internet blogs and forums are full with jealous fans' statements, arguing about the decision of the Grammy's board. They usually say that they have never heard about this Esperanza before, stating that her music is so slow and boring. Things went so out of control that these fans have attacked Esperanza Spalding's Wikipedia page. They put some random facts, misstatements and taunts on the page and than they were quickly removed.
But the things are not always as they seem. It appeared that this Esperanza Spalding is not anonymous, not in any case. It appeared that once again the quality has win over the commercial, because this girl has far more wide music biography that this boy, but lets see what was this girl doing while Bieber was still playing with cars or playing shooter games.
It's actually about a jazz musician, double bass player and a singer, who writes and produces most of her own songs and records. From her appearing in 2005 she has been heralded as jazz's next big thing. Her first album Junjo appeared in 2006 and the second - Esperanza in 2008.
According to AllMusic.com, her first album spent 70 weeks on Billboard's contemporary jazz charts. Spalding's third album, 'Chamber Music Society, ' dropped in the summer of 2010. Spalding was the 2005 recipient of the Boston Jazz Society scholarship for outstanding musicianship and nearly after graduation from college later the same year, she was hired by Berklee College of Music, so she became one of the youngest professors in the institution's history at age 20.
And what follows from this, the quantity is ok, but it often looses from the quality. It's nice best new artist to be someone who actually reads and writes music.
