Premiums Should Be Affordable To Encourage Young People To Become Insured

A Greenaway review to look into the ways of helping to reduce the number of uninsured rivers on the roads, emphasised the need for novice drivers to be able to afford young driver car insurance premiums. It is hoped that by finding a way to reduce the cost of policies fewer young people will drive without insurance and it will aid in encouraging them to become safer and more responsible motorists.

One in four people killed in road accidents are under the age of 25 years old, despite this, just one in ten of the drivers involved are from this age group. Statistics like these leave insurance companies little option but to view all drivers under the age of 25 years old as high risk. This results in the safest of novice motorists having to pay higher premiums because of the recklessness of a minority.

One incentive for new drivers looking to reduce their insurance premium is to sit the Pass Plus driving programme that is continually being recognised by insurance companies. The six-lesson course can be taken following the successful conclusion of the regular driving exam, but tutorials are given on nighttime driving and taking a car out on the motorway.

Some insurers offer as much as 50 per cent cheaper insurance premiums to those who have sat the programme, drastically reducing the costs for new drivers. Somebody who lives in a high premium area, such as a large city but is prepared to complete the programme, could see saving of over Ł1, 000 if they do not make a claim within the first four years.

The level of reductions made by insurers to those with the Pass Plus certificate will vary depending on the premium rate band in which the vehicle is kept and the length of time there is before a claim is made.

Insurance experts believe that young people looking to buy their first car could help themselves to reduce the premiums they are offered, by choosing to purchase a vehicle that does not have the souped-up accessories that help to modify the performance of the car to levels that could be deemed as irresponsible and dangerous.

By picking a modest make and model of car, it will help to reduce vastly, the car insurance premiums that insurers are prepared to offer novice and young drivers.
